Domenico Masone served as mayor of the town of Pietrelcina, Italy, for 25 years and held that position when Padre Pio was beatified and canonized. As the official representative of Pietrelcina, he was received in Rome by two popes, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and he led the planning and organizing efforts for Pietrelcina’s first visit from a pope, culminating in the town’s welcoming of Pope Francis on March 17, 2018.
As a mayor, in September 23, 2021, he shepherded the successful completion of Pietrelcina’s plaza dedicated to “The People of the United States of America” and the installation of the statue "I Embrace You," created by the preeminent sculptor Timothy Schmalz and donated by the Saint Pio Foundation. He retired on October 4, 2021.
On April 28, 2022, Domenico Masone agreed to serve as the Saint Pio Foundation’s representative in the town of Pietrelcina.
